How To Choose The Right LED Street Light for A Road Project

Choosing an LED street light starts with the road. Not with the wattage.

A buyer may ask for 100W, 150W, or 200W LED street lights. This is useful for a quotation. But it is not enough to select the right product.

You can use the same wattage in different road conditions. The result can also be different.

Pole height, pole spacing, road width, light distribution, installation environment, and electrical requirements all affect the selection.

For a project, we recommend checking these factors before confirming the LED street light.

1. Start With the Road Layout

First, identify where you will install the light

Before selecting a fixture, collect the basic road information:

Road width

  • Number of lanes

  • Pole height

  • Pole spacing

  • Pole arrangement

  • Road layout

  • Project location

  • Required lighting level, if specified

Pole arrangement is also important.

You may install the poles on one side of the road. You may install them on both sides. They may also use a staggered arrangement.

These layouts do not put the same requirements on the optical system.

For this reason, a supplier should not select the lamp only from a statement such as:

“We need 150W street lights.”

A better starting point is:

“The road is X meters wide. The poles are X meters high. The pole spacing is X meters.”

If the customer has a road drawing or lighting plan, it is better to send the drawing with the inquiry.

2. Do Not Select the Light by Wattage Alone

Wattage is one specification. This is not the complete lighting solution.

Two 150W street lights can have different lumen outputs, optical designs, drivers, and light distributions.

When comparing products, check more than power.

The main items include:

  • Rated power

  • Luminous efficacy

  • Total luminous flux

  • Light distribution

  • LED configuration

  • Driver

  • Input voltage

  • Protection rating

  • Operating temperature

  • Mounting method

For example, some of the LED street light configurations currently listed on the Xiangrui-Prosper website cover 30W–200W. The listed specifications also include AC85–265V input, IP66 or higher protection, different LED chip and driver options, and different color temperatures.

These are product options, not a recommendation that one specification fits every road.

The correct question is not:

“Which wattage is the best?”

It is:

“Which configuration can meet the requirements of this road?”

3. Check the Light Distribution

Light distribution determines where the light goes.

It should match the road width, pole height, and pole spacing.

A narrow road does not always need the same light distribution as a wide multi-lane road. The pole arrangement also affects the choice.

For this reason, do not compare street lights by wattage or lumen output alone.

If the project already has a lighting design or specific optical requirement, send it to the supplier. If not, provide the basic road and pole information. The supplier can then recommend a suitable light distribution for the application.

Road width + pole height + pole spacing are usually a good starting point.

4. Consider Pole Height and Pole Spacing

The street light and the pole should be considered together.

A lamp may work well at one mounting height but not give the same result when the installation height changes.

The same applies to pole spacing.

A project with short pole spacing is different from a project with long pole spacing.

Before confirming the lamp, check:

Pole height + pole spacing + road width + optical distribution + lamp power

These items relate to each other.

If the customer also plans to purchase the light poles, we need more information.

This may include:

  • Pole height

  • Pole material

  • Wall thickness

  • Pole shape

  • Arm design

  • Base flange

  • Surface treatment

  • Local wind requirements

Xiangrui-Prosper currently lists light pole options from 3 m to 15 m on selected LED street light configurations. The listed wall thickness range is 1.8 mm–8 mm, with Q235A/Q345B/A36/ST52 steel options shown on the site.

Pole shapes include tapered, octagonal, square, and equal-diameter round designs. These are available configurations on the website, not fixed specifications for every project. Base the final pole specification on the project requirements.

5. Check the Installation Environment

Outdoor street lights are exposed to rain, dust, temperature changes, and other local conditions.

The installation location should therefore be part of the product selection.

Temperature

Check the expected ambient temperature at the project site.

A hot climate and a cold climate can create different requirements for the lamp and driver.

The current Xiangrui-Prosper product information lists an operating temperature of -40°C to +50°C

This applies to several LED street light configurations.Check the exact range against the final product selected for the project

Water and Dust

The protection rating should also match the application.

Several LED street light configurations listed on the website use IP66 or higher protection.

Do not stop at the IP number.

Also check the housing, sealing, cable entry, connector, and assembly.

Coastal Areas

Coastal projects require more attention to corrosion.

For example, the light pole may need suitable galvanizing and surface treatment.

The Xiangrui-Prosper website lists internal and external hot-dip galvanizing for some poles. It also lists outdoor powder coating.

The required treatment should follow the project specification.

6. Check the Driver and Electrical Requirements

The driver is another key component.

When requesting a quotation, do not ask only for the LED chip brand.

Ask for the driver information as well.

The specification may include:

  • Driver brand

  • Driver model

  • Input voltage

  • Output power

  • Power factor

  • Dimming function

  • Operating temperature

For selected LED street light products, Xiangrui-Prosper lists Philips, MeanWell, and XiangRui-Prosper constant-current drivers. The listed municipal power input is AC85–265V.

If the project has a specific driver requirement, state it before production.

The same applies to dimming and surge protection.

Confirm these items in the quotation and technical specification

7. Decide What Needs to Be Customized

Not every project needs a completely new street light.

Sometimes the standard housing is suitable.

Only some components need to change.

For example:

  • Power

  • CCT

  • Driver

  • Light distribution

  • Lens

  • Surge protection

  • Dimming function

  • Cable length

  • Housing color

  • Mounting bracket

This can be more practical than developing a new housing.

Xiangrui-Prosper states on its website that LED street lights can be customized according to customer requirements or design drawings. The listed customization options vary by model.

For a project inquiry, it is therefore useful to send the supplier the actual requirements.

For example:

  • LED street light

  • Required power: ___ W

  • CCT: ___ K

  • Pole height: ___ m

  • Pole spacing: ___ m

  • Road width: ___ m

  • Input voltage: ___

  • Driver requirement: ___

  • Light distribution: ___

  • Quantity: ___

This gives the supplier a better basis for selecting or modifying a product.

8. Ask for Technical Documents

Before placing an order, ask for the documents required by the project, such as:

  • Product datasheet

  • Driver information

  • Test documents

  • Warranty

The exact documents depend on the project and local requirements.

If the project has a technical specification from the consultant or owner, send it to the supplier before quotation.

This helps prevent changes after you confirm the order.

9. Do Not Compare Suppliers by Unit Price Only

Unit price is important.

Not the only factor.

When comparing two street lights, check whether the specifications are actually the same.

Compare:

  • Power

  • Lumen output

  • Optical system

  • LED configuration

  • Driver

  • Input voltage

  • Protection rating

  • Housing

  • Mounting

  • Warranty

  • Required documents

A lower price may come with a different configuration.

A higher price may include a different driver, optical system, housing, or other components.

Therefore, you should base the comparison on the complete specification.

LED Street Light Project Checklist

Before requesting a quotation, prepare the following information.

☐ Road width

☐  Number of lanes

☐  Pole height

☐  Pole spacing

☐  Pole arrangement

☐  Project location

☐  Required lighting level

☐  Light distribution, if specified

☐  Input voltage

☐  Quantity

☐  Available drawings

If some information is not available, simply send the road drawing or lighting plan to the supplier.

The supplier can then review the available information and confirm what they still need.

Final Thoughts

Choosing an LED street light is a project selection process.

Do not start with wattage alone.

Start with the road.

Check the pole height and spacing.

Check the road width.

Check the required lighting level.

Check the optical distribution.

Check the environment.

Then confirm the electrical and product specifications.

If a standard product meets the requirements, use it.

If the project needs different power, optics, driver, mounting, or other specifications, discuss customization with the supplier.

For Xiangrui-Prosper, we customize LED street lights and light poles to meet project requirements or follow design drawings. The current product range includes different lamp configurations and matching pole options.

If you are preparing a road lighting project, send the supplier the road width, pole height, pole spacing, project location, quantity, and available drawings.

That is a better starting point than simply asking for a 100W or 150W street light.
